Division 2 League
Johnstownbridge 3-15
Rheban 1-8
Johnstownbridge had already racked up 2-2 by the seventh minute to ensure a good winning margin against Rheban last Sunday at Pairc Droicheda Baile Sheain.
The Bridge had registered a few draws of late but this win certainly left nothing to chance.
Ian Farrell got the game’s first point before Jason O’Keefe added another.
Then Derek Donegan and Padraig Hurley hit the net in quick succession. Donegan finished in a crowded square with Hurley coming on the end of nice one two move with Niall Vaughan.
Jason O’Keefe’s free made it 2-3 to no score before Barry Foy got Rheban on the scoreboard after nine minutes.
Their joy was short lived as Will Holton, Niall Vaughan and O’Keefe all raised white flags.
The impressive John Owens got his first of the day but this was cancelled out by Vaughan, then Pa Barry and Ian Farrell swapped scores.
The visitors were soon given hope as Owens spilt the posts and then Maurice Lawlor’s free found the net. He will say it wasn’t a fluke but the shot ended up
in the net and counted all the same. The score stood at 2-8 to 1-4 at the interval with both sides trying to cope with very greasy conditions. After the restart
Johnstownbridge ripped into attack mode again hitting four without reply through Brian Flanagan, JP Mullen and two from Jason O’Keefe.
Scores from John Owens and Maurice Lawlor sandwiched a Diarmuid Holton effort before Ian Farrell and Will Holton kept the home side clocking up the scores.
Eoin Foley lofted Rheban’s penultimate point before the Bridge hit the net for the third time.
Rheban ‘keeper Joey McDermott was left cursing his luck after making two good saves as Ian Farrell pounced to poke home. You had to feel for the man between the sticks.
Maurice Lawlor finished the scoring on the day.
This result gets the Bridge back on track as they will need a buffer with a number of their players gone on their travels for the summer.
