Veterans Game
'Balyna' Veteran Selection 3-3 'Johnstownbridge' Veteran Selection 0-3
A somewhat 'loaded' Balyna team managed by Ray Cribben took the honours in this entertaining clash against 'Johnstownbridge' managed by Shane Flanagan which drew the
curtain on the clubs Lá na gClub celebrations for 2010. Where we normally have parents watching their offspring in action this time is was the turn of the youngsters
to shout in the encouragement and in yesterday's case fall over in laughter at their dad's attempts to turn back the years. That no major injury occurred is probably
a miracle although if reports are to be believed Pat McDonnell's arm is not turning too many spanners today! The first half was an even affair with whistle shy referee
Colm McNally letting the game flow and the scores were tied 0-2 piece at half time with Peter Farrell and Eamonn Moran registering for the Bridge while Declan Flynn and
Niall Flanagan replied for Balyna.
Balyna took over in the 2nd half and two goals from poacher supreme Michael Murphy - others would call it goal hanging was the difference between the two teams. Balyna
had good performances all over the field with Brendan O'Hara, Paddy Kennedy, Anto O'Brien and Peter Howick rock solid at the back while the Farrell brothers (James, John
and Denis) took no shit from their bridge opponents either. Peter Bourke got in a crucial couple of interceptions that saved 'certain' goals while PJ Doran and Dec Flynn
dominated midfield. Upfront the evergreen Colm Farrell led the attack ably assisted by poacher Murphy and Niall Flanagan. The bridge team tried hard and Johnny Lyons put
in a great performance in goal with Pat McDonnell dominating the square in the No. 3 jersey. Kevin Newman got to grips (literally) with the threat of Niall Flanagan while
Nigel Langan kept an eye on Michael Murphy. In the half back line the dynamic duo of Cliff Byrne and Brian O'Donoghue launched attack after attack with Patrick Farrell
mopping up anything that came through. Tommy Dillon and Mervyn Walsh tried hard to stem the tide at midfield while upfront Peter Farrell, Glen Doyle, Alan Lawlor, Eamonn
Moran and Frank Byrne showed well and on another day (next year) might have had more scores. A mention must also go to match commentator Ronan Flanagan who kept the crowd
informed of the goings-on and well done to him.
